National Disability and Carer Alliance

Working together to improve life for
Australians with disability and their families.

Forming the Alliance

The National Disability and Carer Alliance was established in 2009 by a small group of disability and carer organisations who came together to push for lasting change to Australia’s disability support system.

Our Mission

We want to make sure people with disability and their families and carers are able to enjoy the same opportunities as everyone else in the Australian community.

Every Australian
Counts

The Alliance is the organisation behind Every Australian Counts. The Every Australian Counts campaign began in 2011, and was responsible for mobilising public and political support for the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

With the NDIS now being rolled out across Australia, Every Australian Counts is here to make sure the NDIS is delivered as promised and is the best it can be.

Our Alliance Members

The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) is the peak organisation in the disability sector representing people with lived experience of disability. AFDO and its member organisations are run by and for people with lived experience of disability. AFDO wants to see a community where people with disability can participate in all aspects of social, economic, political and cultural life. This includes genuine participation in mainstream community life, the development of respectful and valued relationships, social and economic participation and the opportunity to contribute as valued citizens.

Carers Australia is the national peak body representing Australian’s unpaid carers, advocating on their behalf to influence policies and services at a national level. It works collaboratively with partners and its member organisations, the network of state and territory Carers Associations, to deliver a range of essential national carer services. Carers Australia’s vision is an Australia that values and supports the contribution that carers make both to the people they care for and to the community as a whole.

National Disability Services is Australia’s peak body for non-government disability service providers. NDS has more than 1,100 members across Australia who provide a broad range of services for Australians with disability. Members range in size from small support groups to large multi-service organisations. NDS represents disability service providers in their work to deliver high-quality supports and life opportunities for people with disability.

Mental Health Australia is the peak national non-government organisation representing and promoting the interests of the Australian mental health sector and committed to achieving mental health for all Australians. Mental Health Australia members include community mental health peak bodies and national organisations representing consumers, carers, special need groups, clinical service providers, public and private mental health service providers and researchers. Mental Health Australia aims to promote mentally healthy communities.
